Registering as Self-Employed

Registering as a Self-Employed

How to Register as Self-Employed in the UK: A Quick Guide

Good news: registering as self-employed isn't rocket science! HMRC understands that starting a business is challenging enough, so they've made the registration process refreshingly straightforward.

The £1,000 Trading Allowance: Do You Even Need to Register?

Here's something many new business owners don't realise: you don't need to register before you start trading. This is particularly helpful if you're testing a business idea or turning a hobby into a side income.

Thanks to the trading allowance, you won't need to tell HMRC about your income at all if you earn less than £1,000 in a tax year. However, once you exceed this threshold—or know you will—you'll need to register for Self Assessment as a sole trader.

The Registration Deadline

You must register by 5 October following the end of your first tax year of trading. For example, if you started trading in July 2024, your deadline would be 5 October 2025. That gives you plenty of time to get organised.

Start Keeping Records from Day One

Even before you register, start keeping detailed records of all your business income and expenses. This isn't optional—it's a legal requirement, and you'll thank yourself later when it's time to file your first tax return or work with a bookkeeper.

Keep:

  • All receipts for business purchases

  • Invoices you've issued to customers

  • Bank statements showing business transactions

  • Mileage records if you use your vehicle for business

Good record-keeping from the start will make filing your Self Assessment much less stressful.

The Registration Process

Registering is genuinely simple:

  1. Go to the HMRC Self Assessment registration page

  2. Select the option that describes your situation (self-employed, partnership, or other)

  3. Follow the step-by-step instructions to create your Government Gateway account

  4. You'll receive a Government Gateway User ID—keep this safe as you'll need it to access your tax account

  5. Complete the registration process (typically takes about 10 minutes)

The whole process is well-signposted, and HMRC provides clear instructions at each step.

Other Registrations You Might Need

Depending on how your business grows, you may also need to register for:

  • PAYE – if you employ staff or take on subcontractors under certain circumstances

  • VAT – if your turnover exceeds £90,000 in a 12-month period (threshold as of 2024/25)

I'll be covering these topics in detail in future posts, so subscribe to stay updated.

The Bottom Line

Starting a business has enough challenges without registration being one of them. HMRC has made this process accessible, and with the £1,000 trading allowance, you have breathing room to test your business idea before committing to the administrative side.

The key takeaway? Start keeping records from day one, register when you need to (but before the deadline!), and don't let the paperwork intimidate you.
